Bangalow Bridges, Northern Rivers New South Wales
Working for the Byron Council as Grants Coordinator, this project formed because five timber bridges in a rural part of the shire were in a dire state. The bridge infrastructure serviced small rural producers, macadamia farms, beef and dairy cattle smallholdings and a pork processing plant. As the old timber bridges deteriorated Council had no choice but to downgrade the weight loading. Local producers needed assurance they could have their trucks operate, but also that emergency service vehicles could reach them in times of need. A successful grant from the NSW government saw the bridges replaced. Timbers from the bridges were then recycled and used in the Bangalow parklands to create a new children’s play area.
